We are a group of Silver Mesa parents who want what is best for our school staff, teachers and students. We believe this can be achieved through a PTO. The district has a policy allowing parents a vote. We first must complete a Notice of Intent and petition and then we will be allowed a vote. This blog will help educate, inform and unite through this process. Keep updated on what is going on here. UPDATE: You should have received a ballot in the mail. If you didn't and want to vote, contact the district. We encourage everyone to study both organizations and vote for the group they believe best represents their ideals.

What's going on...

Some parents at Silver Mesa elementary are interested in exploring the option of a PTO. Canyon's District didn't have a policy allowing parents to choose which group best fit their school. Now they do.
In a few months all parents at Silver Mesa will have the opportunity to vote on which parent organization best serves their students.

What is a PTO? PTO stands for "Parent Teacher Organization". The main goals of a PTO are to unify and include all parents, to benefit the students and support the teachers at the school. A PTO doesn't usually charge dues. If they do ALL the money stays at the school. A PTO includes every parent. With a PTO every parent is a member whether they donate to the PTO or not. That means that every parent can volunteer, every parent can vote and every parent can make decisions. Every parent matters!!!

How can you help? The most important thing you can do is vote when you receive your ballot. No matter the outcome of the vote the result will be the voice of the parents and will be successful if parents support the organization. You can also spread the word. Tell your friends what is happening and encourage them to become informed. Before the vote a petition will need to be signed by 25% of the parents at our school. If you want a vote (no matter which group you will vote for) let us know and we can get a petition to you. Help us out by signing the petition. The parents should have a voice!
