On Tuesday night the Canyon's School Board of Education approved a new policy. This policy will allow parents to choose which parent group is best for their school. This policy
applies to all schools within the district. The steps of the policy are:
1. Complete an NOI (Notice of Intent). The NOI must include 25 signatures (of parents of students at the school) and proposed bylaws.
2. Complete a petition for election. This must include 25% of the parents at the school. The parents who sign the petition are signing for the right to vote. People who support either the current or alternate group should sign the petition.
3. Vote. The parents will get to choose which group they think best represents their school.
The district is still working on the details and actual forms that need to be completed. I look forward to seeing this policy at work. I think it is a great opportunity for parents who, in the past, have felt like they don't have a voice or choice.
I'm not sure where they file the final policy, but if you want to read the version they approved you can find it at this link... http://www.boarddocs.com/ut/canyons/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=9ZSLGR564E91
We are a group of Silver Mesa parents who want what is best for our school staff, teachers and students. We believe this can be achieved through a PTO. The district has a policy allowing parents a vote. We first must complete a Notice of Intent and petition and then we will be allowed a vote. This blog will help educate, inform and unite through this process. Keep updated on what is going on here. UPDATE: You should have received a ballot in the mail. If you didn't and want to vote, contact the district. We encourage everyone to study both organizations and vote for the group they believe best represents their ideals.
