We are a group of Silver Mesa parents who want what is best for our school staff, teachers and students. We believe this can be achieved through a PTO. The district has a policy allowing parents a vote. We first must complete a Notice of Intent and petition and then we will be allowed a vote. This blog will help educate, inform and unite through this process. Keep updated on what is going on here. UPDATE: You should have received a ballot in the mail. If you didn't and want to vote, contact the district. We encourage everyone to study both organizations and vote for the group they believe best represents their ideals.

District Policy

Quick review... Canyons District has a new policy. It is regarding parent support organizations. In the past it was very difficult,
if not impossible, for parents at a school to switch from a PTA to a PTO. Because of this the district wrote a policy that allows parents to choose. Parents can now choose what is best for their school; a PTA or PTO. BUT... there are steps that need to be followed. Here are the steps:

1. A Notice of Intent must be filed with the school district. This must include 25 signatures, as well as bylaws and policies of the petitioning organization. This step gets the ball rolling and ensures that the petitioning organization is serious.

2. A Petition of Election must be completed. This step requires the petitioning organization to gather signatures from 25% of the parents at the school. By signing the petition parents aren't declaring their loyalties, they are just saying they want a choice and vote.

3. A Vote. I'm not totally clear on how this will be done, but from what I understand all parents and school staff will receive a ballot and will have to vote and return the ballot. Whichever group gets the most votes is the organization that will be recognized at the school. No matter how the vote ends up it is a win because parents were able to choose. I don't believe that by myself I know what is best for the school, but I believe that all parents, together, know what is best.
