We are a group of Silver Mesa parents who want what is best for our school staff, teachers and students. We believe this can be achieved through a PTO. The district has a policy allowing parents a vote. We first must complete a Notice of Intent and petition and then we will be allowed a vote. This blog will help educate, inform and unite through this process. Keep updated on what is going on here. UPDATE: You should have received a ballot in the mail. If you didn't and want to vote, contact the district. We encourage everyone to study both organizations and vote for the group they believe best represents their ideals.

PTO in Canyons

If you are interested in learning more about the policy and process of changing to a PTO within the Canyon's school district leave
a comment and I will contact you. I can share what I have learned and answer any questions. Along with a few other PTO supporters we created bylaws and policies that are required when applying for a change to a PTO. I would be more than happy to share these with anyone who is interested.

A few benefits of a PTO:

-All money stays at the school. No money is sent to a larger organization.

-All policies and bylaws are specific for your school. There are certain rules that the district requires a PTO to follow. Other than those few rules policies and bylaws can be made to work for your school. Dues or no dues? You get to decide what is best for your school.

-There are not members and non-members of a PTO. You don't have to exclude willing volunteers because they didn't pay to join your organization. This is a big one for me. It boggles my mind that most schools in Utah have an organization (PTA) that excludes willing volunteers because they don't pay to join. With a PTO you can include EVERYONE.

I won't be posting as much in the coming months. I am still totally in favor a PTOs and look forward to talking with those who feel the same way as I do. PTOs really are incredible. They can be totally tailor made for your school. It give the power back to the wonderful volunteers at the school rather than someone who is disconnected and doesn't know what particular schools need.
