A school's parent organization, (PTA or PTO) has no bearing on state trust land funds and whether a school will receive them.
What is the SCC?- In 1894, shortly before Utah became a state, Congress
created a land trust including one-ninth of the land of the state to support our public schools. Today, schools still have 3.3 million acres scattered around the state. These lands are held by the state as trustee for our public schools. The lands are managed by the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA). All net revenue is saved in the permanent State School Fund. Learn more here
Each school has to create a plan on how to improve our students' education. Read more about Silver Mesa's plan here
"Every school receives School LAND Trust Program funding through a student enrollment based funding formula described in the law. The annual interest and dividend income from investment of the permanent State School Fund is where the annual allocation comes from. The funds flow through the school district, but districts do not withhold any funds. Charter school funds are sent to directly to the school." Read Silver Mesa's annual report here

We are a group of Silver Mesa parents who want what is best for our school staff, teachers and students. We believe this can be achieved through a PTO. The district has a policy allowing parents a vote. We first must complete a Notice of Intent and petition and then we will be allowed a vote. This blog will help educate, inform and unite through this process. Keep updated on what is going on here. UPDATE: You should have received a ballot in the mail. If you didn't and want to vote, contact the district. We encourage everyone to study both organizations and vote for the group they believe best represents their ideals.
