We are a group of Silver Mesa parents who want what is best for our school staff, teachers and students. We believe this can be achieved through a PTO. The district has a policy allowing parents a vote. We first must complete a Notice of Intent and petition and then we will be allowed a vote. This blog will help educate, inform and unite through this process. Keep updated on what is going on here. UPDATE: You should have received a ballot in the mail. If you didn't and want to vote, contact the district. We encourage everyone to study both organizations and vote for the group they believe best represents their ideals.

Stop Once Your Goal is Reached

This blog is obviously a blog about the benefits about PTOs. I like PTOs. I think they are great and would be great for my school. Occasionally I read articles on PTO Today. I came across one about fundraisers and one point in the article really hit me. It is so true and I wish the PTA at my school would understand this point...
Stop Once Your Goal Is Reached

If you raise the amount of money you budgeted, then it’s time to quit. “It goes a long way to building good will among parents that if you reach or surpass your goal in the fall, perhaps you forgo a spring fundraising activity,” says Mabry. “Tell parents that thanks to their support, you won’t have one.”
Is anyone else tired of the PTA asking for more money? Is anyone else tired of your kids coming home with restaurant stickers on their shirts, begging to go to the PTA restaurant night? Is anyone else tired of your kids saying that we need to support the school and go to the PTA restaurant night while you are standing in the kitchen making dinner? The PTA claims to have one fundraiser a year, but what they forget is that every time they have a restaurant night, or parade the kids around the book fair during class time (to get them to ask their parents to buy them books) that they are asking parents for more money and that is fundraising!!
Our PTA is flush with cash. They had a very successful fundraiser this fall and they had a bunch of money left over from last year. They have more than enough money to support all the programs this year and have money to roll over to next year. Stop doing restaurant nights! Stop taking time out of the classroom for your fundraising schemes! If you claim to have one fundraiser than stick to that and be done.
