We are a group of Silver Mesa parents who want what is best for our school staff, teachers and students. We believe this can be achieved through a PTO. The district has a policy allowing parents a vote. We first must complete a Notice of Intent and petition and then we will be allowed a vote. This blog will help educate, inform and unite through this process. Keep updated on what is going on here. UPDATE: You should have received a ballot in the mail. If you didn't and want to vote, contact the district. We encourage everyone to study both organizations and vote for the group they believe best represents their ideals.

Reflections

Reflections is a PTA program. What happens if we change to a PTO? If we change to a PTO we would loose the Reflections program. For some this doesn't matter, for others Reflections is a very important program. Some schools who have a PTO have created their own type of reflections program.

Dues

Did you know that our school PTA charges $5 in dues to join the PTA? Only those who pay are members of the PTA. Did you know that in the 2015-2016 school year our school gets to keep less than $0.50 of the $5.00. The remainder goes to the National, State and council PTA. Only members can volunteer on a PTA board and only members can ratify a budget.

A PTO isn't required to charge dues. Every parent is a member of a PTO. Any parent can serve on a PTO board. Often times a PTO will charge dues their first year to help pay for start up costs (start up costs are around $1000 for the first year and drop significantly after that) but these dues are totally optional. Every parent is a member of a PTO whether they pay dues or not.

Do Something About That

"I always wondered why somebody doesn't do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody." ~Lily Tomlin

The Crazy Ones

"Here's to the crazy ones. The rebels. The troublemakers. The ones who see things differently. While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do." Steve Jobs

Compare

One of the exciting things happening at Silver Mesa is that in the fall the parents will be able to choose if they think a PTA or PTO will best serve the kids at our school. Don't know the difference? Here is a basic overview of the differences...
